14+ Horse Birthday Party Ideas for Your Little Cowgirl
Birthday parties for the little ones are a big deal around our house. Sure, the kids don’t need themed parties, but I love the process of creating a special day dedicated to celebrating each child and his or her interests. Our family definitely doesn’t have an unlimited budget…it is actually pretty far on the limited side… so I DIY a ton and shop for discounts when preparing for a child’s birthday. Our middle child LOVES horses. She has been riding since she was old enough to walk and she is a natural! A horse birthday party theme was perfect to celebrate her 2nd year of life 🙂
Throw the Best Horse Birthday Party
There are so many good ideas for a horse birthday party that it can be overwhelming. This post includes all of the activities, food, decorations, favors, invitation, banner, and food labels that we used for our party so you can see how they worked for us. Hopefully, this will make your decision making a little simpler as you plan your party.
Horse-Themed Party Food
Horse Birthday Cake
For this party, we ordered a beautiful cake that featured a saddled horse, rope, fence, and Western star & name sign. This mama has tried making birthday cakes on her own and…well… let’s just say that I am incredibly thankful for a wonderful & affordable local bakery.
Hay Bales
Small Rice Krispies Treats make the perfect “Hay Bale” horse party snack! If you can’t find the small treats, no worries, you can cut the large treats in half and they work just as well. Stack them on top of each other on a serving tray as a hay stack and they are good to go.
Veggie Horse Treats
Our horses love their veggies and, believe it or not, the kids enjoy them as well! We stuck to the basics with carrots and broccoli, but you could add any other fruits and veggies that you and your kids like. Serve with Ranch or another veggie dip.
Trail Ride Mix
You can’t have a horse birthday party without a little “Trail Ride Mix”, can you? Open a few bags of store-bought Trail Mix or make your own with your favorite treats! We like a Salty & Sweet mix around here:)
Pink Pony Punch
Each birthday party gets its own appropriately themed punch. This party called for a “Pink Pony Punch”. Pink Pony Punch is a simple mix of Raspberry Sherbet & 7-Up or Gingerale. You can add some pineapple juice if you want to get fancy with it.
Pony Party Decorations
The decorations for our horse birthday party were fairly simple. We used a pink and purple homemade banner, homemade food labels, pink balloons and streamers, and a purple tablecloth from the Dollar Tree. I try not to pour a ton or time and effort into the decorations because the kids don’t notice anyway. My energy is better spent on food and activities.
Games & Activities
Ride Stick Horses
For this party, my mom and I made custom stick horses for the kids to ride. The horses were kept in “The Stables” until time for this activity. We gave these out to each child as party favors as well. My kids are still playing with these horses (almost two years later) just as much as they still play with the homemade light sabers from our Star Wars Party! DIY for the win!
Piñata
Sometimes we make our own pinatas, but sometimes there just isn’t enough time or creativity for all.the.things. We ordered this Horseshoe Pinata from Amazon and it was perfect!
We did this piñata inside and realized a little bit too late that we didn’t have a great spot to hang it up so we improvised with my husband:)
Obviously our little girl loved it! :):)
Ride a Pony
After completing the indoor activities, we took the kids outside to see the horses and goats. Each child had the chance to ride our pony, Ginger, in the round pen. It was wonderful to see how happy the children were to successfully ride a horse. If you do this activity, please be sure that each guest wears a helmet while riding. In hind sight, I wish that we would have made homemade horse treats so the kids could feed the horses as well.
Make Horse Treats to Feed
Letting the kids make their own homemade horse treats is a great hands-on activity for your horse birthday party! Just lay out the prepared ingredients, give the instructions, and let the kiddos mix together some yummy treats. You will need to pop these in the oven for a few minutes so you can let the kids complete another activity while the treats bake and cool.
Horse Party Favors
I typically lean to the minimal side when it comes to party favors. I still like to give favors, but I try to make sure that the favors given serve a purpose or will last long-term. Some good horse party favor ideas include:
- Schleich Horse Toys– We have several of these around our house. They are used in the farm section of the play room and in the bath tub.
- A high-quality stick horse- We made custom stick horses and gave one to each child.
- A durable bracelet with a horse charm
- Horse shaped crayons or regular crayons with horse-themed coloring sheets
- Horse Shaped Chocolate treats
DIY Birthday Gift Idea
If your birthday girl loves horses & hair bows, she will love a hand-made horseshoe hair bow holder! This is the one that we made for our girl 🙂
