29 of the Best Right-Brain Homeschool Math Resources
Teaching math at home can be a struggle for a right-brained mama like me. I know I am not the only one facing this parenting-school-age-kids dilemma, so I put together a list of homeschool math resources that can help us all out.
29 of My Favorite Homeschool Math Resources
Homeschool Math Curriculum
Teaching Textbooks
We really enjoyed using this CD-ROM based curriculum in our homeschool! The lectures, practice problems, lesson work, quizzes, and tests are all included in the CD-ROMS, but there is an online option as well. The program is self-grading and is presented in a game format to encourage kids to reach the next level.
Math-U-See
Math-U-See is the program that we used from 1st grade through 3rd grade. It is a wonderful program with DVD lessons that accommodate the teacher manual and workbook. Math-U-See also comes with manipulative blocks so kids can visualize the problems as they are presented.
Life of Fred
I haven’t personally used Life of Fred, but I have read enough glowing reviews of this program to know that it needs to be included in this list! Math topics in Life of Fred are taught in a story book form with this curriculum which is great for kids who don’t grasp number problems naturally.
Math Lessons for a Living Education
This is my favorite of the homeschool math resources! My 4 year old daughter is using this curriculum for math in K4. It is based on the Charlotte Mason method that teaches through living books. Each level goes through the story of twins named Charlotte & Charlie and the Math lessons are taught through these stories. This format helps children to apply their new knowledge directly to real life situations.
Math Activity Books
Lift-the-Flap Fractions and Decimals
Lift-the-Flap books are huge in our house! My kids have actually started reading these books at dinner-time because they love them so much! Kids can lift flaps on each page to discover more about fractions & decimals in an interactive and engaging manner.
Fractions and Decimals Activity Book
This activity workbook accompanies the Lift-the-Flap Fractions & Decimals book in our home and it works great to help children apply the skills taught in the Lift-the-Flap book.
Lift-the-Flap First Math
This book is similar to the Fractions & Decimals book, but it is geared toward younger children. It is filled with colorful and engaging pages that teach simple addition and subtraction through flaps and imagery. Like I said, my kids love these books so much that they read them during lunch and supper!
Lift-the-Flap Adding & Subtracting
Usborne Books has such great homeschool math resources! My kids and I especially love the lift-the-flap math books like this one! Young kiddos love to use this book when learning how to add and subtract. Each page features flaps to help children discover answers to questions and to have fun while learn!
Adding and Subtracting Activity Book
You can use this activity book to apply addition and subtraction skills in a fun & colorful workbook form in order to engage your kiddos.
99 Maths Puzzles
We like to use little books like this in our book basket, car rides, and for times when the kids say, “I’m bored!”. This particular pocket-sized book is filled with fun puzzles and games that require math skills and logic to complete.
Wipe- Clean 123
If your kids are like mine and LOVE writing with dry erase markers, the wipe-clean math books are for you! There is a Wipe-Clean First Math and a Wipe-Clean 1,2,3 option. Kids can trace numbers and count objects while practicing penmanship when using these books.
Learning Wrap-ups
Learning Wrap-Ups provide a fun alternative to flash cards for practicing math facts. They engage the visual and tactile learning senses to help kids retain information better. You can find learning wrap-ups for addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions.
Times Tables Activity Book
This book is full of illustrated activities, scenes, and stickers to test your child’s times tables knowledge in a fun way that they will look forward to!
Math Reference Books
The Usborne Illustrated Dictionary of Math
This is the go-to math reference book for anyone studying math! It has over 500 definitions, colorful illustrations & diagrams, and pre-worked examples! It also includes internet links so your child can expand on his or her subject knowledge. The Illustrated Dictionary of Math is a must-have homeschool math resource!
Usborne Illustrated Elementary Math Dictionary
This book is a great math reference point for elementary aged children. Internet links are also provided in this dictionary so children can study further if they so choose.
First Illustrated Dictionary of Math
The First Illustrated Math Dictionary is designed for kiddos who are in their first school years (pre-k and kindergarten). It provides a simple introduction to numbers and counting. Internet links are also included in this dictionary.
This Is Not a Math Book
Art and Math are combined beautifully in this book for students who are bent more toward creativity than numbers and logic.
This is Not Another Math Book
