Simple Homemade Sweetened Condensed Milk with Honey
Sweetened Condensed Milk can typically be found at your local grocery store in 14 oz cans. If you prefer homemade or if your stores don’t have it in stock, it is super simple to make at home! My favorite recipe is this homemade sweetened condensed milk with honey as the sweetener!
What is Sweetened Condensed Milk?
Sweetened Condensed Milk is simply milk that has been boiled to decrease the water content and then had sugar added. Evaporated milk is the same thing minus the sugar addition. Pssst… you can make evaporated milk at home, too 🙂
Homemade Sweetened Condensed Milk with Honey Recipe
This is a simple sweetened condensed milk recipe sans white sugar that I truly believe you will enjoy so much better than the canned version you would purchase at the store.
Ingredients
- 2 cups whole milk
- 2/3 cup honey
- 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
Substitution tip- You could use maple syrup instead of honey if you prefer. Maple syrup is thinner than honey so you may need to simmer a little longer to reduce the proper amount.
Directions
STEP 1
Combine milk and honey in a small-medium sauce pan.
STEP 2
Heat on low to dissolve the honey. Make sure that it is all dissolved well before moving to the next step.
STEP 3
Bring to a simmer over medium-high heat. Do not stir while the mix is simmering or the sugar could crystallize.
STEP 4
Lower to medium heat and simmer for about 35 minutes. The milk will reduce to about 1/2 of its original volume and thicken during this time.
STEP 5
Remove from heat and add in the tsp of vanilla extract.
STEP 6
When it is finished, do not stir in any sugar crystals that might have formed on the sides of the pan. Let it cool and store it in an airtight container like a mason jar for 1-2 weeks in the fridge or 3 months in the freezer.
STEP 7
If the sweetened condensed milk looks separated and a little chunky after cooking, you can put it in a blender or food processor to completely blend it together.
STEP 8
Use this homemade sweetened condensed milk to make homemade coffee creamer recipe or any other recipe that calls for sweetened condensed milk.
This homemade sweetened condensed milk will have a brown hue to it due to the honey, but it will have the creamy texture and sweet flavor that you look for in this dairy product.

Love that you included honey or maple syrup instead of regular sugar! Do you have experience testing out this and the coffee creamer with stevia?
Thanks! I try to use honey in place of white sugar everywhere that I can. I haven’t tried this with stevia, though.
