2-Ingredient Homemade Butter
This homemade butter recipe is super simple! It requires only 2 ingredients and about 20 minutes from start to finish.
You will use the basic process of agitation to separate the cream into butter and buttermilk so you really get two products from one recipe. If you want to use the buttermilk, be sure to have a clean container ready to pour it into when you squeeze the butter out.
Homemade Butter Ingredients
- 6 cups heavy cream
- 1 tsp salt (optional)
- 7 TBSP ice water
Directions
*This recipe makes about 4 sticks or 2 cups of butter
STEP 1
1. Put your heavy cream into a blender, food processor, stand mixer or mixing bowl. If you use a mixing bowl and a whisk, this could take a loooong time, but it is doable.
STEP 2
2. Mix until the cream breaks and separates. This usually takes less than 10 minutes in a blender. You will see a liquid (buttermilk) start to collect and the butter will begin to thicken.
STEP 3
3. After the cream has separated, pour the buttermilk out and then ice water into the bowl with the the butter. This will help to separate out more buttermilk.
STEP 4
4. Place a strainer or a piece of cheesecloth over a large bowl and pour the butter, buttermilk, and water over it.

STEP 5
5. Squeeze the homemade butter with your hands, with a clean towel, or with the back of a spoon to squeeze out more buttermilk. You don’t want wet butter so this is important.

STEP 6
6. Stir in salt at this point if you wish. Leave it out if you want unsalted butter.
STEP 7
7. You can use this homemade butter immediately or you can place it in the refrigerator for it to harden. It should last covered in the fridge for 1-2 weeks.
