In this post, you will learn how to make 2-ingredient Homemade Brown Sugar.

What is Brown Sugar?

Brown sugar is simply white sugar (sucrose) with molasses. Sugar starts out with natural molasses, but this molasses is removed during processing. When molasses is added back in, you have brown sugar. The more molasses, the darker the sugar.

How to Make Homemade Light Brown Sugar

If you want to turn the granulated white sugar from your pantry into brown sugar you simply add molasses back in. Here’s how:

Ingredients

  • 1 cup White Granulated Sugar or Xylitol
  • 1 TBSP Molasses

Directions

1. Pour one cup of sugar into a small-medium sized bowl.

2. Mix in one TBSP of molasses (I used Brer Rabbit Blackstrap Molasses).

This step works best if you cut the molasses in as if you were cutting shortening in a biscuit recipe. A fork works great for this.

3. Continue mixing/cutting in the molasses until it is well combined with the sugar.

How to Store Homemade Brown Sugar

  • Store homemade brown sugar in an airtight container in your pantry.
  • To keep the brown sugar soft, place a piece of white bread, a few apple slices, or a couple of marshmallows into the sugar. This will add moisture to the brown sugar to keep it from getting hard.
  • OR Use a Brown Sugar Saver. Soak this little piece of terra cotta in water for 15 minutes and then place it into the sugar container.
