Homemade Buttermilk from Heavy Cream


  • 6 cups heavy cream
  • 7 TBSP ice water
  • 1 tsp salt {optional}


Make Butter

  • Mix the cream until it separates into buttermilk and butter. You can follow these instructions for making butter to walk you through this process.
  • Place the butter in a container to the side and store the leftover buttermilk in an air-tight container in the fridge.
